Tithing

I saw this story on CBS News website tonight and watched the video. When it comes to money and people, greed doesn't want to give God his 10% (tithe). That is really want it comes down to! We have tithed our whole Christian lives. A tenth of your increase BELONGS to God and you give that to whatever church you attend regularly.

Some want to say that they think the Pastors or the church leadership is handling the money wrongly. Well, you know what....if they are, then GOD will handle them! You are just required to pay a tenth of your increase and God will handle the rest. If Benny Hinn and all the other false prophets are taking these people's "tithe" wrongly.....they will be judged. I mean its not like they are going to Heaven anyway! If a man robs God, either by not paying his tithe or stealing from his church members tithe, he isn't a Christian! PERIOD.

In the video, a lot of scripture was taken out of context and that just irks me to no end, but you know what, that is the way of the world and those that look at it from a theological view or a "religious" view and not a spiritual one. The Born-Again believer has an insight that a unsaved individual does not have!

God has blessed us over the years. There were months in the past years that it was either pay our tithe or buy groceries. And guess what we did.....WE PAID OUR TITHE! And wouldn't you know it, God made a way and something came up and it ALL WORKED OUT! We have never been without our needs; shelter, food, etc. God provides for his children!

Ever feel like you have holes in your pocket? Like it seems like you aren't getting anywhere financially? Well, the first place you need to check is your giving. Are you paying your tithe? Are you giving freewill offerings as the Bible directs to the Lord? If not, do these FIRST and the rest will fall into place! It's a win - win situation!!

Bottom line -> A Christian will want to do all that God says to do in his word! For you "all I got to do is pray and its over folks", that's called OBEDIENCE! Things you do after you pray, you know.....Walking in the Spirit and NOT sinning. It doesn't end at hello! A real born again Christian will have good works because he is a Christian. He has faith....YES, but his faith without his works is dead. So get to working.......walk in God's word and pay your tithe! And if you still whine about paying it.....get saved and it won't be hard anymore! ; )

Ok lesson over, class dismissed. ~stepping down off of soapbox (for now)

I agree with you 100%.What if your husband isn`t saved and does not allow you to give 10%?I think God knows our hearts and circumstances. He knows what motivates our hearts. If I could give 10% I would.
I understand what you are saying about being selfish and not trusting God.Thoes are wrong reasons for not giving 10%.Our faith is what motivates our hearts!

Hey mom211911, well if he refuses, there isn't much you can do I guess. I have never been in that situation and can't really say what I would do cause I don't know lol.

Hi! I just stumbled across your blog and I like it. I am a single mom and I make less than most anyone I know, but as soon as I learned about tithing soon after coming to know the Lord 9 years ago, I have put my trust in God that way. I have no debt, work from home (in home daycare-hard but rewarding), rent a small house that is perfect for us (me and 2 active boys), and I have 3 months emergency money in the bank. GOD IS SO GOOD! It really is all HIS, if He wants back 10% who am I to argue. -Becky in NJ

There is a difference between tithing and the 'prosperity gospel' and seed faith that Copeland, Paula White, Creflo, and Benny likes to teach. (to name a few) When you give, you are not to expect monetary gain, or any other type of gain because our treasures are in heaven. Sure He can bless us monetarily if He chooses, but to EXPECT this is to tithe with the wrong motive.

For those against tithing, (no one here - just in general) they should read 1 Corinthians 9 all the way through.

There is a verse (don't have it handy) where it says 'give what you have, not what you don't have' (paraphrased) No one EVER mentions that verse yet it is key to those who tithe their grocery money away.

BTW - did you know that the shepherd(your pastor) is also supposed to provide for you (the flock) financially and otherwise if you need it? Have you EVER heard a sermon on that? Probably not.

Here's a quick study I did on the duties of the shepherd (speaking contextually about mega churches)

Thanks for the comment Carol! I have to say I do disagree slightly with some of the things you mentioned. For starters, I know my shepherd is Jesus and a Pastor is merely like a "sheep dog" so to speak lol. Keeping the sheep in line but Jesus is our Shepherd and we are his sheep. The Pastor is just put them to guide us and prod us along the way in the right direction, hence "feed my sheep".

The people should take care of the Pastor and not muzzle the ox as the Bible speaks of.

In Old Testament times, it was the Priest who received the offerings and sacrifices for God and also he took a part of it as God had directed. He is feeding us spiritually and he should reap carnal things.

So we may differ there but thanks or your comment nonetheless! ;)

I don't think we disagree - I agree that we are to tithe and I referred to 1 Corinthians 9. (I didn't want to type all that out, otherwise you'd have a book of a comment. :)

The other thing you mentioned about the sheep dog etc. - Yes our Shepherd is Jesus and like Jesus, the shepherds here are to emulate Him. (there's lot of parallels between Christ, the church, and marriage) So the duties you listed of the 'sheep dog' is in fact the same duties as the shepherd.(guide us, prod us and lead us) The Bible makes no mention of a 'sheep dog' and those verses I gave are for the shepherd. Jesus did those things mentioned as an example to shepherds to lead the flocks down here. They are held to a higher standard and will be judged more severely if they are leading the sheep in the wrong direction because they have the scary business of leading us rightly. If God has called them to be shepherds (and hence follow Jesus and lead as He did) then they had better heed the warnings about being a good shepherd.

Blessings,
Carol

p.s. Nice blog btw :)

I definitely agree Pastors and preachers will be responsible and judged for things they do to the sheep. I can't remember what verse and don't have time to look it up right now but it does say in the Bible about how they will have the greater judgement (something like that) because of the teaching, etc. It is sad that there are those who are misguided by a so-called "Man of God" and they will have the blood of those people on their hands in the end if they led them the wrong way. I do believe if we individually search and pray to God that he will lead us away from that type of preacher, etc. But it does go on today in a lot of mega churches but a true Christian, God will lead out of all that mess.....Praise God! ;)

Thanks for the comment!

Let's not forget the great example we have of Jesus Christ, who is the Chief Shepherd.
Luke 9:58 "And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head."
The Savior Himself did not have where to lay His head. The instructions given out to the first 70 disciples did not promise the "blessings" that some claim come from the ministry either. It sort of puts the ministry in the right prospective. A ministry - of love.
