The Television

I have a long story of my TV experience growing up but I will try and give a summary. We didn't have a TV until I was 9, and it was quite a change when that TV came in! It is something that is forever embedded in my mind and even as a child, I saw its detrimental effects on my parents, our family and even myself. It wasn't long before we all had a TV in our rooms and at dinner, we took our food to our rooms and sat in front of our "teacher" the TV. From then on, the only time we sat together for dinner was holidays.

I watched my parents slowly allow things into our home and watched my Dad stop preaching against them over time. What was once thought sin, one at a time, became "ok" and acceptable...after all, it was once saved, always saved so who cared? From worldly music to cursing - it was all ok now. However, before the TV, I can not forget the first time my Dad found a worldly music cassette tape in my oldest Sister's purse. He called us all in to witness what would happen if we brought that into the house. He said that Satan was not going to come into our home and then he smashed that cassette tape with a hammer! However, a few short years later he bought me my first ever rap CD, and then from there - it was a free for all.

My parents had decided that the TV could be my teacher and believe me - it did teach me, but not the sort of things I should have ever learned in the way I did. It infiltrated my mind with all kinds of sin that I didn't know about and brought up lusts inside me that I had never known before then. Our family had became like Lot when he pitched his tent towards Sodom - it wasn't long after "watching" the world from afar that he eventually had to go there and be a part of it. That is much the same as watching sinful things on TV - sitting in your home watching the world and watching others sin; stirring up evil imaginations and lusts within yourself. Setting the evil before your eyes with temptations abounding.

Genesis 13:12-13

Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Would you allow someone to have sex in your home and watch them? Then tell me WHY you do by watching it on TV? Hey, homosexuals - come on in my home and let me and my family watch you kiss each other. Hey, ill clad women - come on in my home and let us watch you and look at your nakedness. Hey, fornicators, adulterers - come on in my home and let my family watch you have sex. We love watching sin - give us MORE is the cry! Come on in cursing, covetousness, idolatry and all manner of sin - my family and I want to watch you! Hey, Satan - here are my children, go ahead and teach them.

I saw what TV can do to a family and I won't let that happen to mine! My daughter is allowed to watch some DVD's, mostly cartoons or educational. We have to screen things before we let our children's little eyes be exposed to them.

Keep pitching your tent towards Sodom, Lot, and let's see how long it is before you - one by one, turn what used to be "sin" into acceptable and join them.

I recommend all to go read this story: "The Stranger"

O I am so busted! My husband works 12 hour day's and I am home alone a lot and I do have the T.V. on for background noise. When my children were at home T.V. was very limited.Trying to find movies rated G was hard, that was all that was allowed. The lesson here is turn my T.V. OFF!

This is very hard when it is your husband.

LOL tealady - wasn't trying to bust you hehe. I haven't owned a TV since 1999, so it is easy for me to keep it off. =0 Anytime I want to watch something that is decent, I can get it online nowadays - although there is not much decent, sadly.

Unprocessedgal - I would say it is hard! Prayer changes things!

Thank you for this post! I just taught my ladies last Sunday about the evil influences of tv and movies, along with other things. We haven't had one since we got saved 16 years ago, and every day I thank God He delivered us from it's grip. We were like your family, one in every room practically, and always on. It was bad enough 16 years ago, but now??? I can't stand to be around one. Praise the Lord!

You don't even want to know how bad it is now lol. I see it whenever I visit my family and I can't believe all that is allowed on TV nowadays and that "Christians" would even watch that filth. Thanks Vickie! :)

After much conviction at the end of last year, i finally turned the tv off during the day however my husband loves tv and would have it on when he got home until bedtime. I prayed about this and am very happy to say that this year he decided to turn the tv off and then we ended up selling it! Hallelujah! I totally agree that as Christians we should not be letting the sinful ways of the world into our homes to corrupt our families minds.

That is a wonderful story displaying the power of prayer - thanks Megan! :)
