What's Happening at Cambridgeshire Academy?

I haven't done a homeschool update in a while because we took a few months off for the new baby.  My daughter did independent work in January and then I restarted with her this month.  We have always schooled year-round, but kept the typical September start schedule but learned that a January start actually makes much more sense to our schedule and life in general.  In a typical year, we only need to school 36 weeks, that leaves us with 16 weeks to take off, which is 80 days.  I don't normally need to take full weeks off, so we just take a day off whenever we feel like it or want to go on a trip.  We also take off from Thanksgiving till New Year's because we love doing crafts during that holiday time.  Here is our schedule for the rest of this school year:

School from Feb. 4 - Nov. 22
Total weeks during this time = 42 weeks
Weeks we can take off with this schedule = 14 weeks (that is 70 days off!!)

I love, love, love this schedule! I also like the fact that in some years we don't have to take off if Katie wants to school those extra 4 months in something she is interested in. For instance, say she wants to take an elective in her later years - she can complete the regular subjects and "finish" that grade and then spend those extra months completing one course if she chooses, such as sewing or whatever else she fancies.

In Bible, we are about ready to begin our in-depth study of the tabernacle.  Not only are we learning what the priests had to do and how the tabernacle was to be set up - we are BUILDING the tabernacle!!  I can't wait, I'm really excited about this and how it will help Katie understand even more as she is very hands-on.

Katie is still loving Latin!  I'm loving it too as I'm learning right along with her.  The plan we are using will have her multilingual by the end of high school in English, Latin, Greek and Spanish.  She does need to have someone to speak with in those last 2 languages to be fluent, so we hope by that time we can find someone that speaks those to talk with her once a week - or who knows, I may join her in this journey and we can speak all these in the house LOL!  I want her to learn Greek because of the Biblical understanding and if she ventures off to learn French in high school as she has already suggested, I won't stop her.  Learning at home has so many advantages for children (and adults) - if she wants to finish all the other subjects so she can have more time for learning a new language or other skill - she can!

I'm planning her 4th grade curriculum this week even though we don't start that till next January, I like to have it just in case we finish the prior level and we will just go on to the next one this year.

Lastly, we joined another homeschool group that has events almost daily - hikes, parties, biking, science clubs, art classes, etc.  Katie loves chess and yes, they have a chess club but it is all boys but she doesn't care as long as she can play somebody!  It is really great to meet other like-minded moms as well and talk about homeschool-related things.  So, that is what's happening at Cambridgeshire Academy.....till next time.

You can do so much more at home, at least it seems so to me! It is fun too! :)
