Homemade Dishwasher Detergent; Powdered and Liquid

I posted a recipe back in 2007 about homemade dishwasher detergent, but can't seem to find the post!  Either I accidentally deleted it or missed it while searching.  Anyway - I had shared the powdered version of dishwasher detergent that has been around for years:

Equal parts of Borax and Baking soda; Combine; Use 1-2 T per load

I used it for a while but I've never been a big fan of powdered detergent, so I just bought some cheap store-bought liquid dishwasher detergent and have been using that.  Until it dawned on me that I could easily make a paste by adding water to the borax/baking soda powder.  (yes, I know that should be common sense, but it seemed to have escaped me until recently lol).

So, to get homemade liquid dishwasher detergent, simply add water until you get the consistency you want!  I use 2-3 T of the liquid per load.

Hello Bev,
I just use dish soap.. I add about a Tablespoon , maybe a bit of bleach , if the dishes are really dirty.
of course I put vinegar in the rince holder.
(we have softened water )
did you hear that all dishwasher deter. have been banded in WA. state i think it is.. anyway.. the 'green' ones arent' working , so people are going to Idaho to smuggle in d-washer soap :-) SO the state goverment will have to make it a crime to use reg. dishwasher soaps !
What a riot !
if they only read your blog , they could save them selves the trouble & the car trip !

Lisa, thanks for your comment! :) Haven't heard that about the dishwasher soap, sounds funny.

As for the dish detergent, I'm surprised that you haven't had any adverse reactions with that because I saw a few videos on youtube warning against using dish detergent in the dishwasher because of the bubbles lol. Check them out:

Oh yes, I have had bubbles in my dishwasher. I put in the little tray that holds my soap bottles not realizing it had a lot of soap residue on it. It makes the water come out the bottom! While we were visiting my parents my daughter was helping out with the dishes and being the industrious sort, thought she would fill up the rinse aid dispenser...with Dawn! She had seen me use blue jet dry and she thought it was the same thing! I just about had a heart attack. :) I just left the cap off and ran it anyway...no mess, all's well that ends well (sometimes he he).

Oh, I wanted to ask, does it work for getting the little food bits off the dishes? I'm not a big fan of washing my dishes before I wash my dishes. I can't wait to make the liquid hand soap. I keep checking the levels in my dispensers every other day or so (so i can empty my refill bottle)and they're just not going down fast enough. lol

Thanks for the comments Crissy! I'm not sure about the food on the dishes? I always have rinsed food off of mine before putting them in the dishwasher even before the homemade detergent, so I wouldn't know.

I just made up a batch of the dishwasher detergent! I took an empty 2 lbs. maxwell house coffee container and added 5 cups borax and 5 cups washing soda. I also had a coffee extra coffee scoop that perfectly measures 1 tbsp! I'm so excited!
