Some readers may remember my post years ago about how we found out about what stocks we had been invested in through my husband's employer's mutual funds. I felt like some kind of curse lifted off of us when we sold all of them and were no longer part-owner in companies that do (and/or fund) all manner of evil.
I had a difficult time finding any companies that were clean and met my long list of requirements before I became LITERALLY a part-owner of. To own stock is to have a hand in the company as you are an owner as well and even get voting rights. I knew we would be accountable before God and how was I going to explain to Him that that is how Americans make wealth or save for retirement by profiting from pornography and abortion to all manner of evil and things that have destroyed the Christian fabric of the country. I even tried to invest in a few companies that seemed innocent enough because all they did was sell vehicles right!? Well no, they not only sell vehicles but the company funds groups that were against my beliefs and fund perverted organizations contrary to the Word of God.
That's when I said I'm done. My conscience (and my husband's) could no longer agree with this way of investing. Yes, we only bring in about 4-5% on our retirement now but we can stand before God with a clean conscience. We aren't part-owner in any of that evil and the destruction of society. I'd rather have less and have clean hands than have hands tainted from filthy lucre.
The amazing thing is there are other avenues of investing where you are not taking a part in a company. However, they're not popular because of greed - sin sells! And sin stocks are what almost every American's portfolio is made up of. Isn't it ironic that the staunchest Republican's portfolio is full of companies that are completely against their politics, morals, ethics and beliefs? But they're making money, so it doesn't matter right?
This isn't like going shopping at Kroger and purchasing items. That doesn't make you a part-owner but buying stock in the company would and then your hands are in whatever they do. Greed blinds and if you find yourself making excuses to why it is ok to be joined together with these companies, then you have your answer as to your motivation.
A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. - Psalms 37:16
Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. - Proverbs 15:16
Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. - Proverbs 16:8
